Vincent Pan, our Executive Director, appeared on ABC7-KGO News on consecutive nights to criticize and contextualize ESPN’s use of the headline “Chink in the Armor”. The sports network had used it to describe New York Knicks player Jeremy Lin’s game streak fumble and it ignited a sharp response for the use of this racial slur. Ultimately, one ESPN employee was terminated and another was suspended. You can view the ABC7 news clip on our YouTube channel at youtu.be/ZLaBKcStCyU.

Jenny Lam, our Director of Community Initiatives, spoke on the University of San Francisco’s “Infinite SF” panel on February 21. This series explores and celebrates unique aspects of some of San Francisco’s neighborhoods from the perspective of local historians, community activists, service providers, and USF faculty. Jenny presented on Chinatown with other speakers from Chinatown Community Development Center, Chinese Historical Society of America, and Chinese Newcomers Service Center.

CAA held a press conference last November to highlight the plight of a SFUSD employee, Yuen-Ming Sin, who was losing her job due to an expiring work visa that the school district didn’t renew. Her case revealed that the district lacked a clear process for how to assist employees when they need to petition for work visas, which meant that valuable employees like Yuen-Ming could easily lose their jobs after serving the school district for years. CAA is working with the school board to establish clear guidelines.
